Addictive Peanut Butter Cookies

Picture of Cookies

If there’s one thing that perfectly encapsulates childhood nostalgia, it's the taste of homemade cookies. For me, that taste is deeply intertwined with the peanut butter cookies made by Martha, a warm-hearted lady who babysat me when I was young. Her cookies were not just a treat—they were a cherished ritual of my childhood, with their irresistible aroma filling the air and their perfect crunch making every bite memorable.

Fast forward to my high school years, Martha's presence in my life had faded, but the memory of those cookies remained as strong as ever. When my mom asked what kind of cookies I wanted, my answer was a simple yet profound, “Peanut Butter.” My mom, always eager to recreate the magic, embarked on a quest to find a recipe that could rival Martha’s legendary cookies. Despite her valiant efforts and many recipes tried, none seemed to hit that perfect nostalgic note.

However, hope was not lost. My mom eventually stumbled upon a recipe from a local cookbook created by Helen Kriesel, which came closest to what I remembered. Yet, my quest for the perfect peanut butter cookie didn’t end there. Inspired by the memory and armed with the recipe, I began experimenting to put my own twist on it. The result? A cookie is so addictive that it’s hard to stop at just one.

Introducing My Twist on Classic Peanut Butter Cookies

I’ve replaced traditional sugars with maple syrup and honey, which adds a unique flavor profile and a touch of natural sweetness. To ensure these cookies turn out just right, I recommend refrigerating or freezing the dough for a few hours. This step lets the flavors meld together beautifully and gives the cookies a delightful texture.

Here’s my recipe for these irresistible peanut butter cookies:

Ingredients:

  • 1 Cup Butter

  • 1 Cup Peanut Butter

  • 1 Cup Honey

  • 1 Cup Pure Maple Syrup

  • 3 Cups Flour

  • 2 Eggs

  • 1 Tsp Vanilla Extract

  • 1 Tsp Salt

  • 1 Tsp Baking Soda

  • 1 ½ Tsp Baking Powder

  • ½ Tsp Cinnamon (Optional)

  • 12oz-16oz Chocolate Chips (Optional)

Directions:

  1. Preheat Oven: Set your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.

  2. Cream Butters: In a large bowl, cream together the butter and peanut butter until smooth.

  3. Mix in Sweeteners and Eggs: Beat in the honey, maple syrup, and eggs until well combined.

  4. Add Dry Ingredients: Stir in the flour, salt, baking soda, baking powder, and cinnamon (if using). Mix until everything is well incorporated.

  5. Chill Dough: Refrigerate the dough for a couple of hours or freeze for an hour. This step helps the cookies maintain their shape and improves their texture.

  6. Form Cookies: Place small balls of dough on a greased cookie sheet. Flatten each ball with a floured fork, creating a crisscross pattern.

  7. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown.

  8. Cool and Enjoy: Let the cookies cool on the sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
